Creative Holiday Packaging? Scarf in a Jar

So, we were talking about creative packaging for the holidays with our editors. Organize.com Staffer, Crystal Lopez came up with an idea that we just loved. She bought each of her friends scarves that fit their personalities and “canned them” in one of our Quattro Stagioni Canning Jars from Italy. Her friends loved them as much as we did.

Add your favorite holiday ribbon, gift topper, twine or raffia and you’ve got yourself a gift with some extra thought. Very clever Crystal!

We’d love to hear your creative gift packaging ideas. Share them with us on our Organize.com Facebook page.

Happy Organizing!

Are You Ready for the Twelve Days of Christmas?

I’ve seen so many adorable ideas for filling or making Advent Calendars this year on Pinterest. If you are crafty enough to make your own calendar, felt is a great material to work with and can be found at just about any craft store by the yard. Hurry…because the red will be a quick sell out, but don’t pass up the gray flannel.

If you aren’t the the craftiest mom on the block or just don’t have the time, we’ve found what we think is a great alternative to a homemade calendar. Our Christmas Countdown Advent Calendar is a simple classic design and made by Reisenthel, so you know it’s sure to be nice.

Looking for an alternative to candy for your family’s Twelve Days of Christmas countdown this year? Try crafting some gift tags with something fun written all over them to share with Mom, Dad or as a family that is special and will also create great memories. Decorate cookies, unwrap a new book to read, go sledding with Dad are just some of the fun ideas we’ve come across. These thoughtful little gift tags will give you some extra time with every child (or adult!) in your house and something for everyone to remember.

Whether your countdown calendar is made from scratch or store bought (our lips are sealed), make your kids feel extra special and give them something that money just can’t buy.

Naughty or Nice? Elf on the Shelf Helps Santa

This Elf is full of cuteness. Who has been naughty and who has been nice? Using playful rhymes and an adorable holiday story, The Elf on the Shelf reminds children that Santa is watching. By day, the accompanying plush Elf keeps an eye on the children, reports to the North Pole after bedtime and returns to a new location in the home, creating a super fun hide-and-seek game each morning.

I love that children can register their elf online and receive a special response from Santa. Something about this concept that keeps a little bit of an old fashioned innocence with us.

We didn’t have an Elf on the Shelf when my kids were growing up, but we did have a hide-and-seek tradition with an ET figure that I think came in a McDonald’s Kids Meal. The idea was to hide ET for someone else to find him and the fun of it was sneaking around to do it.

My kids are grown now, but that little ET still hangs out in our house today and shows up when you least expect him.

Sharing a Thanksgiving Place card Idea

Thanksgiving is only two weeks away and so is one of my favorite things to do as I get ready for my guests…setting the table. Last year, I wanted my Thanksgiving table to feel like a fall harvest. Using white linens for simplicity, I added a leafy garland down the center of the table, mixed crystal bowls of different shapes and sizes filled with whole walnuts in some and fresh pears in others. I used my traditional holiday touch of silver candlesticks and lots of candles in pretty little mercury glass votives with crystal jewels that shimmered. I used fresh pears as my place cards and set them in the center of the plate of each place setting. I cut a small slit into the top of each pear and inserted a name tag made out of cardstock. I love the idea so much that I’m going to use a fresh fruit again this year as a place card holder and I might even use the pears again, but with a fresh twist.

Organize.commer and lead Content Editor Crystal, found a great idea from our friends at Divine Twine and since I have a new passion with baker’s twine , I’m on it. I’m planning on trying on the twine this year with using a pretty cardstock paper for the name tag, hand writing my guests name on each one and then using a coordinating color of baker’s twine (available in eight yummy colors) that works with the colors of my table. It’s simple, gives a personal touch and I can prepare everything ahead of time.

If you have a favorite handmade place card idea for the holidays, share your images with us on our Organize.com Facebook page. We’d love to hear from you.

Happy Organizing!

Divine Twine is Divine

If you think twine is “Divine”, you are going to love our new “better than baker’s twine” as much as I do. Just in, are the yummiest colors of Divine Twine in cotton candy pink, cherry red, aqua blue, sunny yellow, oyster gray, lime green, black licorice and even airmail twine in a red, white and blue combo. The added feature in this twine is that it’s soft to touch, yet the 4-ply construction makes it nice and strong.

I’m in love with ridiculously cute twine because it can be used for so many things. I’m dreaming gift wrap and craft projects, but the possibilities are endless. Think about wedding and baby shower favors, scrapbooking, card making and home-made baked good packaging and gifts for the holidays.

I recently hosted an Italian dinner themed Engagement party. Everything was red, white, craft paper and anything authentic that worked. I incorporated the red and white twine into my decorating. One of my favorite things – that I didn’t actually plan on but happened as I designed it, was tucking the flatware into flat white bags stamped with a fork and spoon and then tying the red twine around the bag as an accent of color. I placed the bags in the middle of the white dinner plates which gave a really fun touch to each place setting.

I had planned paper boats (like french-fry boats) for the antipasto to give a real restaurant feel, but couldn’t find the red + white boats when I needed them. I made a quick swap to white take-out containers, which worked out just fine. Once I added a craft paper label with the word ‘antipasto’ in a typewriter font, I tied the red twine around the container for just the right drop of color, another depth and some texture.

The ideas are endless and so is the fun. Get organized with some ideas with your holiday packaging. The more time you have to plan and do… the more creative you can be.

Happy Organizing!
